Castel dell'Ovo

castel-dell'ovo550x309

In English, Egg Castle –  is a seaside castle located on the Gulf of Naples.

The castle’s name comes from a legend about the Roman poet Virgil who puts a magical egg into the foundations to support the fortifications.

Had this egg been broken, the castle would have been destroyed and a series of disastrous events would have involved the city of Naples.

The site was originally settled by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC.

Then the ancient Romans built a villa, finally exiling the last western Roman emperor here in the 5th century AD.

After that it became a monastery, then was destroyed before a castle was built by the Normans in the 12th century. The current castle was built in the 15th century.

These days the castle contains the Museum of Prehistory and is also used for events and exhibitions. You can wander the rooms and admire the wonderful views from the towers.

A fishing village grew up around the base of the castle in the 19th century, Borgo Marinari, which is now known for its restaurants and marina.

Walking around Borgo Marinari and Via Caracciolo, you can taste a relaxing and romantic atmosphere, you can enjoy your drink tasting special local food and admire the gulf.
