Positano

positano550

Positano is located in one of the most beautiful valleys of the Amalfi Coast. The atmosphere is  cosmopolitan and international, while still feeling safe and restful.

A kind of very exclusive village where you can find exclusive restaurants and shops for shopping, eating and relaxing.

Clinging to the cliffs and gullies of this magnificent coastline, Positano is the Amalfi Coast’s number one tourist destination. With its beautiful bay and lovely beaches, Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo, it’s no wonder visitors love it.

The town dates back to the 10th century when people from further north along the coast fled the invading Turks and took refuge in a Benedictine Abbey here. The site was easier to defend so they stayed and Positano grew on the side of the steep mountains which drop down to the sea.

Once a sleepy fishing town, the town is now a tourist mecca, still looked over by the gold dome of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which houses a Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary.

Expect to climb a lot of steps when exploring the steep streets and don’t miss the precarious little bridge on the coast road called the Ponte dei Libri (Bridge of Books) which is surrounded by rock formations that look like piles of books.

Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta

Located right in the center of Positano, in the small Flavio Gioia square.

With its decorative, colorful, dome of Vietri maiolica (tiles), the church is a typical example of the architecture found in this beautiful area.

If you are visiting it during the weekend you will probably have the added perk of seeing a wedding;

it’s one of the most popular churches in the area for exchanging vows.

Step inside to see a delightful classical interior, with pillars topped with gilded Ionic capitals and winged cherubs peeking from above every arch.

Above the main altar is a 13th-century Byzantine Black Madonna and Child.

During restoration works of the square and the crypt, a Roman villa was discovered; still under excavation, it is closed to the public.
