Sorrento Cathedral and Bell tower

Sorrento-Cathedral--and-Bell-tower550x308

The Cathedral, built early fifteenth century in Romanesque style has been restored several times up to the 1924 when the entire facade was rebuilt. Noteworthy the side door from 1474 in Renaissance style.

Inside the church, in addition to its baptistery, where the most well-known citizen of the town was baptized, there are many  paintings of the Neapolitan school of the 1700 century, an archbishop throne in fine marbles and several wooden marquetry works of local artisans such as the pictures of Via Cruces or the wooden panels of both main and side doors. All these are works of contemporary young artisans of marquetry art.

Noteworthy is the bell tower’s base from the Romanesque age probably built around the 1100s with various types of trunks of columns, alternating classic and Byzantine capitals with different type of marble fragments. This construction is important to the town’s urban history since the small spaces, under the raised arches, were used for public meetings. The upper part of the tower was either rebuilt or at least greatly reduced to its present size around the 15th century.

The Church and the Cloister of San Francesco

The-Church-and-the-Cloister-of-San-Francesco550x308

The Church and the Cloister of San Francesco, the monastery’s origin dates back to the first half of the 8th century. The cloister’s architecture presents crossed arches in tuff on two sides of the portico, expression of the late 13th century style and round arches on octagonal columns on the two opposite sides. Various elements of pillage are present, as in the three corner columns, originally part of  pagan temples.

Next to the convent is the church of St. Francesco which dates back to the 16th century.

Visit it on a splendid, sunny day. In the shade of the porches or under a tree, you can savor all the magic of a place enveloped in silence, colored by stupendous flowers made brilliant by the sunshine and rich in scents which mingle in the air.

The Basilica of Sant' Antonino

The-Basilica-of-Sant'-Antonino550x308

The patron saint of Sorrento is Sant’Antonino, so it’s not surprising that there is a large church in his honour found on the square which also bears his name, Piazza Antonino. He died in AD 626 on February 14th and naturally in Sorrento this takes precedence for celebration over the commercialized St Valentine’s Day which gets pushed into the background as the silver statue of Antonino is taken from the church and marched through the streets.

Most statues of the saint depict him standing on a sea creature, and the famous story goes that on Sorrento beach he saved a child who had been swallowed by a whale; two whalebones in the church are said to come from this very creature. Within the basilica there are many other artefacts dedicated by sailors who survived shipwreck and wished to thank this patron saint of rescues.

Another legend is that the Archangel Michael appeared to Antonino and told him to build a church in Sorrento. This he did. Subsequently his tomb was built alongside it. In the 11th century this was rebuilt into the current Basilica, although S. Antonino’s crypt inside is more modern, rebuilt in the 18th century.

Piazza Tasso

Piazza-Tasso550x308

In the main square, once called Largo of the Caste, the Baroque Church del Carmine opens up: in its interior it is kept an interesting painting by Onofrio Avellino.

In the same Piazza Tasso, the Palazzo Correale is located with its magnificent majolica dating back to 1772 (the inscription on the portal’s marble scroll ornament bears the date 1768 but it is known that as early as the XVth century a house belonging to this family stood here and was later totally transformed by the 17th century reconstruction.

Vallone dei Mulini

Vallone-dei-Mulini550x308

It is considered one of the most enchanting views of the Sorrento Peninsula. It is known for its variety and unique plants.

These plants settle within ferns. Possible reasons for the appearance of these rare plants include moisture in the area, nearly complete lack of ventilation, sun exposure, and the presence of tuff.

Its name derived from its beginning function: to grind grain.

The valley originates from the antediluvian waters in a tufa plane about 37,000 years ago, following the eruption of the Campi Flegrei. In 1866, Piazza Tasso was established, and it caused the mill and the surrounding sea to be isolated.
